2/18 - 22 L4 ICW Amelia Island

 L4 ICW February 18 - 22 2022

Amelia Island FL / Cumberland Island GA

Together with the amazing Ryan Rushton, I will run an L4 coastal kayak instructor certification workshop (ICW) off Ameila and Cumberland Islands in northern Florida and southern Georgia. The focus of the ICW will revolve around four central goals.
  • Train and certify instructor candidates at their paddling levels, up to L4.
  • Help instructor candidates to develop a solid individual kayaking pedagogy.
  • Sharpen and develop candidates personal paddling and group management skills in L4 conditions.
  • Have fun, make friends, network, and sing kumbaya.
If you are an L4 assessed paddler, an L3 instructor, and ready to up your game, then this course is for you.  And if you don't meet the prerequisites, you might still have a great time and learn a lot as a practice student, so reach out.

I am an experienced teacher with over 4,500 expedition nautical miles under my belt. Everything that can go wrong, has happened to me, and I have a track record of making sure it doesn't happen to my students.

As a resident of Southeast Alaska, Ryan is fortunate to live and work on one of the world’s most rugged and beautiful coastlines. Inspired by the sea, mountains and people he shares the water, his aim is to help develop boaters rise to the level where they have their own amazing experiences. Ryan’s student-focused approach is influenced by coaching at top symposia, leading expeditions along remote coastlines, training instructors/guides and running courses around N. America. “I really enjoy working with paddlers at all stages of their development – helping them achieve their goals – even what they didn’t think possible! No matter how serious you are about your boating, it’s all about having fun, discovering and having and adventure!”.

Ryan is an ACA L5 Advanced Open Water Instructor Trainer Educator, ACA L5 Advanced Swiftwater Rescue Instructor and a BCU 5* Leader. Ryan has been involved with the ACA since he became a sea kayak instructor in 2001 and has lead and taught coastal kayak students and instructor candidates around the world. Some of his favorite places to teach/play are coastal Georgia, Maine, Bay of Fundy (NB/NS), Wales, N. California, and the Pacific Northwest. Of course, his favorite is the coast of Alaska!

The price for the 5 day course is $675 for instructor candidates, $400 for instructor updates, and $400 for practice students. Spaces are limited and available on a first come first serve basis.

Spaces can be reserved with a non refundable deposit of $100. All final payments must be made before the course starts.

The option also exists to take this course as an instructor update, an ICE, or an IDW, so please reach out if interested.

The course will be based out of Fort Clinch state park and we invite the candidates to get campsites near ours, Loop BCH - Tent Only - F, for camp fire fun and chill time.
